Jody Morris has backed both Arsenal and Brentford for changing their transfer deal for David Raya by getting him on a loan deal first.

Everyone thought David Raya was moving to the Emirates on a permanent basis this summer, but Arsenal, instead, will sign the Spanish star on a ‘£3 million’ loan deal, with an option to buy for ‘£27m’ at the end of it, as reported by Sky Sports.

Former Chelsea coach Jody Morris praised the Bees for being an ‘extremely well-run club’ and added that the Gunners can oversee what the player does before making a call, as he told The Transfer Show on Sky Sports (09/08/23 at 7:25 pm).

This does make things very interesting because there has been a lot of talk about Raya being signed up by the Premier League title challengers – Peter Schmeichel just can’t believe that the London club are going down this road.

Many think that Mikel Arteta already has an established number one in Aaron Ramsdale, but his manager clearly wants to add competition to the proceedings – Michael Owen called Raya ‘top-class’ last season and one of the best in the league, as he told Premier League Productions (06/03/23 at 7:35 pm).

For some, that’s dangerous, but Arsenal are going ahead with it, as Morris reacted to the transfer twist.

“I have said before, Brentford are an extremely ran well club and have been for a good few years,” said Morris.

“They have a top, top manager in place that they want to make sure they protect themselves. Okay, signing a new deal with Brentford might look quite a lot on paper.

“But it will just mean that Arsenal will cover whatever new wages he has moved onto, so there are no new wages they will be handing out for the new player.

“If they like what they see and they want to make it a permanent one, then that deal is still there, whereas Brentford, they know they have an asset in a goalkeeper, where if things don’t go too well and Raya wants to come back, then Brentford are in pole position.”

Interesting move by Arsenal

This one has caused debate, and in truth, it’s not the first Arsenal signing under Arteta that has resulted in such big talk.

Even this summer, Kai Havertz’s capture has got a lot of people talking and whether or not he has the quality to help Arsenal win the Premier League title.

Most of the time, Arteta has been proven right, and maybe, just maybe, this will prove to be another genius move of his
