According to Record, Tottenham Hotspur are now interested in a move for their former player, Marcus Edwards.

Edwards, of course, has been making plenty of headlines recently for his Champions League performances against his former club, and it seems as though his showings in Europe have done enough to convince Spurs that they made a mistake in letting him go.

Edwards was considered a talent at Spurs – many will remember Mauricio Pochettino comparing the youngster to Lionel Messi during his time at the club, but that isn’t the only comparison Pochettino made.

Indeed, the Argentine also compared the winger to Erik Lamela, stating that the Englishman has a similar style to Lamela’s when he was a youngster at River Plate.

Edwards’ Lamela comparison

Pochettino spoke to Sky Sports about the talented winger a few years ago.

“He’s small, he’s left-footed, I remember a little bit (Erik) Lamela when he was at River Plate, remember he had long hair, when he was 14, 15 years old, there is a lot of videos on YouTube that you can see, that he took the ball, didn’t give a pass and shot straight away.

“He (Edwards) is a very good prospect and potentially he can be a top player, but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player. But now it’s how he builds his future, that’s very important. And it’s our responsibility to tell him.”

More apt than Messi

Everyone usually throws the Messi comparisons at Edwards, but, in our view, the Lamela comparisons are much more apt.

Much like Lamela, Edwards is capable of the spectacular from time to time, but he isn’t as consistent as a player like Messi – even if his style is similar.

The Sporting star is a gem – albeit an unpolished one, which is how Lamela was described at a similar age.

Unfortunately, Lamela’s full potential was never unlocked, but perhaps Edwards’ path will be paved with more success after going off and cutting his teeth in Portugal before potentially making his triumphant return to Spurs.
