Jamie Carragher has spoken about how sections of Liverpool fans want owners like the Qataris at PSG after the French club were knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Liverpool legend pointed out that you can have ‘unlimited funds’ like the Ligue 1 champions, but it doesn’t necessarily equate to success, especially in the Champions League.
PSG have been booted out on five occasions at the last-16 stage of domestic football’s biggest stage and Carragher labelled that a ‘joke’, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (08/03/23 at 10:20 pm).
Liverpool owners FSG have a mixed relationship with their fans, and at their most recent Premier League game where they smoked Manchester United 7-0, a banner flew above Anfield which wrote ‘FSG Out. Klopp in’.
There are some who feel that Jurgen Klopp should be backed more in the transfer market and the club’s stagnation this season is down to a lack of that during the summer transfer window, especially in midfield.
But Carragher was making the point that PSG have splashed the cash, yet, they aren’t anywhere near winning the European Cup, so money isn’t always the answer.
“With PSG, you can lose to Bayern Munich, a big name is going to go out here,” said Carragher.
“But to be involved with how long they have had Qatari ownership and state ownership. More money than anyone else. Buying the best players. To go out five times in the last-16 is a joke. A joke, it really is!
“What it says to me as well, and I am talking about my own club here, there is a lot of criticism, at times, for Liverpool’s ownership and they need more money. They need Qataris to come in or someone from around the world, who has got unlimited funds.
“It doesn’t mean anything if there’s no expertise in what you are doing, in terms of bringing the right players in. In an ideal world, you would like an owner with lots of money and expertise in the transfer market. They just don’t have it.”
LIVERPOOL’S FORTHCOMING SUMMER
Whilst splashing the cash isn’t always the answer, even Manchester City are proof of that given they haven’t won the European Cup also, some sort of refreshment will be needed by those upstairs in the summer.
The Reds might have picked up their form in the Premier League of late, but changes still need to be made to the team, a lot of departures and fresh faces, especially in midfield.
But will FSG, where there was previous talk of the Americans wanting to sell, put the required money on the table? Especially for someone like Jude Bellingham, who is probably THE player Liverpool fans want at their club next season.
