Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has told Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, on Instagram that he is a ‘great’ and a ‘legend’ of France football following his international retirement.

On Monday evening, news broke that the 37-year-old, who only featured in the 2022 World Cup final less than a month ago, has decided to hang up his gloves on the international stage.

The Tottenham star represented France 145 times, including experiencing the greatest night of them all when they became world champions in 2018.

Not forgetting that Lloris also won the UEFA Nations League, as Varane experienced both memorable nights alongside his fellow countryman.

Nonetheless, when it was announced that the £100k-a-week Spurs player (Spotrac) had retired from France duty, Varane sent the following message on his IG. In the comments section of Varane’s IG post, Real Madrid and Brazil legend Marcelo reacted with a raised hands emoji.

“Our Capi! Congrats on your international career,” said Varane. “It has been an honour to defend our country alongside you. You are now a great legend of French football!

LLORIS A FRANCE LEGEND

Whatever happens, Lloris can put his name alongside the greats of French football, and boy, do they have some of the greats of the game.

That World Cup triumph will live long in the memory of his supporters and it’s probably the start of Didier Deschamps’ side dominating international football.

Argentina pipped them to the post to perhaps the greatest final of them all in Qatar, but come the Euros, but most importantly the next World Cup, then France are going to be right amongst it all once again, no doubt.
