Another problem with Joe Gomez’s fitness somewhat tarnished Liverpool’s victory away to Southampton on Tuesday night.

Liverpool moved back to within a point of Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League standings by narrowly winning at St Mary’s.

Gomez, who joined the Reds in 2015, went off injured just before the half-time break with a suspected ankle injury.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed after the game that the 24-year-old defender still had pain, with Adam Lallana, his former teammate on Merseyside, admitting it would be ‘absolutely tragic‘ if the player was set for a spell on the sidelines.

With Liverpool having a Champions League final on May 28, now is not the time for Klopp to lose any of his players.

And a leading medical expert on Twitter has suggested that if his suspicions are correct, he will miss the final against Real Madrid in Paris after revealing a likely prognosis of three weeks.

Dr Rajpal Brar, a United States-based physiotherapist, tweeted:

Massive blow

If true, yes it’s certainly a negative piece of news for Liverpool – and the player himself.

Gomez might not have played anyway, given that he’s only an understudy to Trent Alexander-Arnold, but he’s another defender Klopp would and could have used if he needed to protect a game on Saturday week against the Spanish champions.

Gomez’s fitness problems have been well documented down the years and although this won’t rival any of his previous ones in terms of duration, not being available for the Champions League final might hurt him immensely.
