Tottenham Hotspur fans could have been forgiven for having a wry smile on their face last night after developments in the Champions League.

What’s the story?

Well, if you think back to the summer, Tottenham had agreed a deal for Jules Kounde with Sevilla.

Marca reported how Spurs had approached the centre-back, but he turned them down as he wanted Champions League football.

Kounde ultimately stayed with Sevilla to play in Europe’s top competition – but he may not be particularly pleased with that decision right now.

Sevilla lost to RB Leipzig last night, which sent them crashing out of the Champions League – meaning Kounde only got six matches in the competition after rejecting Tottenham’s offer.

Could Spurs go back?

Whether Spurs could now return for the French defender, who has a £68 million release clause in January now remains to be seen.

Kounde may be more receptive to Spurs’ offer now Sevilla are out of the Champions League and Tottenham have Antonio Conte in charge.

Indeed, Kounde may well have a chance playing Champions League football again next season if he was to join Spurs.

Conte’s side have made fine progress in recent weeks, which has seen them climb to the verge of the top four in the Premier League.

That makes them a far more attractive proposition for potential players to join in the January transfer window.

And with Tottenham thought to be on the look out for two new defenders next month, it could be that a move back for Kounde isn’t entirely off the cards.
