One of the most bizarre stories in English football this week has come from League Two where Bradford City have appointed Mark Hughes as their new manager.

The Bantams sacked Derek Adams last week, and while many were anticipating an underwhelming appointment, the west Yorkshire outfit have gone out and hired a former Manchester City manager.

Hughes managing in League Two is a rather strange sight. After all, he’s been a regular in Premier League dugouts for the best part of 15 years, working for the likes of Blackburn, Man City, Fulham, Stoke and Southampton, but now, he’s going to be coaching at a much lower level.

It’s been quite some time since Hughes was linked with a Premier League job, so perhaps that’s why he’s had to take the plunge.

He was reportedly strongly considered by the Everton board to replace Marco Silva back in 2019, while he was also bizarrely suggested as an option for Manchester United last year, but other than that, Premier League opportunities have been few and far between for the Welshman.

Whether or not a stint at Valley Parade can help Hughes get his managerial career back on track remains to be seen, but after almost replacing Marco Silva at Everton a couple of years ago, this seems like something of a step-down.
