Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal want to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in the January transfer window.

That is according to The Mirror, which has claimed a potential hurdle for Arsenal in their quest to bring Zubimendi to the Emirates Stadium in the middle of the season.

So, what is being reported about Arsenal and Real Sociedad defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi? Let’s take a look.

What’s the story?

Well, according to The Mirror, Arsenal are on the hunt for a new defensive midfielder in the January transfer window and are looking at a possible deal for Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi.

Arsenal appreciate Zubimendi, who is one of the best defensive midfielders in La Liga.

The 24-year-old has a release clause of £53 million in his contract at Sociedad.

The report has claimed that Zubimendi is “more than happy” to stay at Sociedad and wants to play in the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League.

The Mirror has claimed that the midfielder is “expected to stay”.

The report has noted interest from Arsenal in Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz as well.

Arsenal need to focus on summer transfer for Martin Zubimendi

In my view, Arsenal are not going to be able to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in the January transfer window.

I do not see Sociedad willing to cash in on Zubimendi at all in the middle of the season.

After all, La Real are in the running for a top-four place in the La Liga table this season. Sociedad are also playing in the UEFA Champions League.

Zubimendi has scored two goals and given one assist in 13 La Liga matches this season.

The 24-year-old scored one goal and provided three assists in 36 league matches last season.

True, Zubimendi has a release clause of £53 million in his contract, but if the defensive midfielder himself wants to stay at Sociedad until the end of the season, then there is nothing Arsenal can do about it.

I believe that if Arsenal are really keen on Zubimendi, then they should try to sign him in the summer of 2024.
