To say Aleksandar Mitrovic’s form this season has been incredible is something of an understatement, with the Serbian striker now on 40 league goals for Fulham this campaign.

Just one year after Ivan Toney broke the record for most goals in the current edition of the Championship, Mitrovic has already demolished that number by some distance as the Fulham star looks to achieve one of the greatest individual seasons in English football history.

With four games left to go, Mitrovic could become the highest goalscorer in a single season in English football in over 80 years. And with that in mind, here are five other insane goal records that have been set in England over the years.

Most goals in a 38-game Premier League season – Mohamed Salah (32)

Hitting 30-goals in a Premier League season is something very few players ever achieve in their careers, which is what made it a shock when Mohamed Salah not only achieved this in his first season as a Liverpool man, but also broke a Premier League record along the way.

Salah in the 2017/18 season was a different beast and a player very few expected to take off as well as he did, and it will likely be some time before a Premier League player even comes close to matching the winger’s 32 goals for the Reds four years ago.

Most goals in an English first-division season – Jimmy Greaves (41)

32 goals in a Premier League season is incredible, but hitting 41 at the age of 22 is even more insane, yet that’s just what the great Jimmy Greaves did for Chelsea in the 1961/62 season.

A titan in the English game, Greaves is regarded by many as the greatest goalscorer the Three Lions have ever produced, and the legendary striker’s death in 2021 only highlighted just how phenomenal a goalscorer the Chelsea and Tottenham legend was in the 1950s and 60s.

Most goals scored a second-tier season – Guy Whittingham (42)

With Mitrovic already on 40 goals with four games remaining, beating Guy Whittingham’s record of 42 could become a reality for the Serbian striker, with the former Portsmouth man even congratulating the Fulham star after the Cottagers’ promotion to the Premier League.

With 42 goals for Pompey in the 1992/93 season, Whittingham currently holds the record for the most goals scored in the second tier in a single campaign, although based on Mitrovic’s form, it won’t be long until this incredible stat has also been shattered by the 27-year-old.

Most goals scored in a season post-war – Derek Dooley (46)

Mitrovic beating Whittingham’s record this season like a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’, and another accolade the Fulham star could hit this campaign is Derek Dooley’s incredible 46-goal year with Sheffield Wednesday.

Regarded as one of the Owls’ greatest ever players and a legend for Sheffield United as well for his impact off the pitch at Bramall Lane, Mitrovic will have his work cut out if he is to break Dooley’s record of 46 goals in a season with four games of the Championship remaining.

Most goals scored in a single English league season – Dixie Dean (60)

Records of 42 and 46 are well within the realm of possibility for Mitrovic and any other striker in the Championship, but Dixie Dean’s otherworldly record of 60 goals in a single season is unlikely to ever be matched in English football in our lifetimes.

A legend for Everton and regarded by many as the greatest striker in pre-war England, Dean’s record has stood for over 90 years, and whilst players are hitting more unimaginable heights, it is unlikely that the iconic attacker’s 197/28 achievement will ever be contested, let alone matched or beaten.
