Liverpool and Tottenham are reportedly in the mix to sign Fiorentina and Morocco star Sofyan Amrabat but in quotes published by CalcioMercato – the transfer target has expressed how much he would love to play for Diego Simeone.

Amrabat, 26, has been one of the World Cup’s best midfielders. Not quite a breakout star given he is already a player to have impressed at Fiorentina and attracted previous Premier League attention. But certainly, one that has surprised.

Indeed, as have Morocco. A previous CM report claims Amrabat is a £34.5m target for both Liverpool and Tottenham. The report claims Spurs are ready to make an offer for the midfielder, while Jurgen Klopp personally wants him.

But Amrabat, who has a contract at Fiorentina until the summer of 2024, was quizzed on his future ahead of his nation’s semi-final against France. He says that he would love to play under manager Simeone at Atletico Madrid.

“What Simeone does, what he has achieved, he has coached Atletico Madrid for many years. I like his style of play. He has won a lot and I have a lot of respect for him. His team’s players are physically strong and aggressive.

“I like playing like this. Morocco and Atletico similar? Yes. I’ve always said that I like playing like this. For what I think Atletico and Morocco can be similar. Even a style like Gattuso’s teams. Every manager has his own style.”

While it might not come as alarming to the Premier League duo in that Atleti are just another club looking to sign Amrabat – his opinion of Simeone’s style should be. Simeone is renowned for playing an incredibly defensive system.

That formation suits Amrabat to a tee. That ability to shield the back four and win adulation for his ability to break up opposition attacks, make a nuisance of himself; tackles, blocks, headers. Then, pass the ball to those more attacking.

At Liverpool and Spurs, he would be tasked with having more effect on the ball and transitioning – moving up the pitch. But if he was to play under Simeone at Atleti, he would suit their defensive, pragmatic approach to matches.
