Three-time NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion Mac McClung says some players were reluctant to participate in this year’s competition if he entered.
The Chicago Bulls’ two-way guard confirmed he will not take part in All-Star weekend despite winning the previous three contests.
McClung said discussions about the potential field played a role in his decision to withdraw. His absence removes the opportunity for a fourth straight title and guarantees a new champion.

McClung says participation was uncertain
Mac McClung spoke about his decision while reflecting on conversations leading up to this year’s Dunk Contest.
The reigning Dunk Contest champion described uncertainty around his involvement and how it could affect other entrants.
“There was a lot of back and forth. I trained like I was going to do it. But I think there were some guys that weren’t going to do it if I did it.”
The remarks suggest his recent dominance may have influenced how other players viewed their chances in the event.
McClung opted out despite preparing dunks
McClung also revealed that he had prepared potential routines and was physically ready to defend his crown. He ultimately concluded that stepping aside would be better for the contest as a whole.
“I had stuff ready. But I don’t want to take away from the event or make it harder for other guys to want to be in it.”
The 26-year-old has appeared in just 10 NBA games across four seasons, spending much of his career in the G League while becoming one of the most memorable performers in recent Dunk Contest history.
