Alberto Moreno has been speaking to El Periodico Mediterraneo about his exit from Liverpool, where he made some interesting revelations.

What’s the story?

Well, the left-back joined Villarreal on a free transfer after leaving Liverpool in 2019, just after winning the Champions League.

The Spaniard eventually lost his place in the side to Andy Robertson, although he still managed to rack up 141 appearances for the Reds.

Speaking about his exit, Moreno said: “I spoke with Jürgen Klopp about my situation (Andy Robertson took his place) and he told me he was counting on me.

“In my fifth year, I was offered to renew, but for another five years. I said no. We’d had many years in England. I have three children and spoke with my wife, and we decided that the best thing was to return to Spain. I just wanted to go back to Spain.”

It just sounds like a case of pure bad luck for the 29-year-old.

Admittedly, Moreno wasn’t the best defender in the early stages of his Liverpool career, although he improved significantly.

Sadly, he just happened to bump into Andy Robertson, who is now the best left-back in Europe – in our view.

With a player like Robertson ahead of you in the pecking order, game time is always going to be hard to come by.

In that respect, Moreno was right to leave Liverpool, despite having the offer of another five years at Anfield on the table.

Since his departure from Merseyside, the Spaniard has lifted the Europa League with Villarreal, beating Manchester United on penalties last season.

Moreno warmed the hearts of Liverpool fans everywhere after that game, dedicating the victory to the Reds in the dressing room after full-time.

Thanks to his attitude during his time at Liverpool, and his conduct since leaving, Moreno is a well-liked figure among the Anfield faithful.

Leaving Liverpool with a Champions League medal and a healthy reputation is pretty good work, in our view – fair play to Moreno.
