Everybody is talking about the Thibaut Courtois saves v Liverpool in Saturday’s Champions League final.
Liverpool could and probably would be European champions for a seventh time now if not for the Belgium international.
Real Madrid won the Champions League final 1-0 against Jurgen Klopp’s side in Paris last night.
According to BBC Sport, the Reds had 24 shots compared to Real’s four throughout the 90 minutes, illustrating the level of dominance achieved by the Premier League runners-up.
Nine of those efforts were on target but, courtesy of Courtois, none of them rippled the net.
The former Chelsea goalkeeper produced an astonishing performance to thwart Liverpool at every turn at Stade de France, with his saves likely to be remembered for years to come.
Afterwards, Courtois uploaded an Instagram photograph of himself planting a deserved kiss on the trophy.
And Christian Benteke, who left Liverpool in a £27 million deal under Klopp [BBC Sport], has summed up the stopper with his response.
Benteke, now at Crystal Palace, merely responded by writing, ‘Some player‘ in what is probably the most simple and yet effective way to describe the 30-year-old.
It was a second-half winner from Vinicius Junior which ultimately proved enough to down the Anfield outfit, with Alan Shearer pointing the finger of blame firmly at Trent Alexander-Arnold for his defending in the goal.
Despite Liverpool’s first-half dominance, they could – and perhaps should – have ended the half a goal behind, when Karim Benzema had a goal chalked off rather controversially.
Afer the game, Courtois claimed that incident instilled an element of ‘fear‘ in Klopp’s side in what may be a plausible theory, given that Carlo Ancelotti’s troops started the second half much the brighter of both sides and ultimately scored from it.
The Vinicius goal was a factor in the win, but it was the Thibaut Courtois saves v Liverpool which largely resulted in the Spaniards winning this competition for a 14th time.
