Tottenham star Cristian Romero has sent Lionel Messi a message after he was named FIFPro Men’s Player of the Year at The Best awards.

What’s the story?

Well, the Tottenham No.17 played alongside the PSG No.30 in Qatar as Argentina won the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

Romero and Messi appeared in all seven games together – including the thrilling win against France in the final – and the Spurs defender has now sent his fellow South American a message on Instagram.

The 24-year-old Tottenham star sent Messi a handful of emojis, including a heart and the applauding emoticon, after the PSG forward thanked family and friends when reacting to his award.

You can see a screenshot of Romero’s message below.

Romero played all 120 minutes in the World Cup final against France as Argentina won on penalties, with Messi scoring twice as Kylian Mbappe netted a stunning hattrick.

In doing so, the France international became just the second man to score three goals in a World Cup final, after Sir Geoff Hurst.

Messi could have taken Romero away from Tottenham

Interestingly, there was a time when Messi wanted Barcelona to buy Romero before the South American eventually signed for Spurs in a £42m move from Atalanta.

It was The Athletic who claimed that Messi wanted his fellow Argentine to join him at the Camp Nou, although Barcelona did not think he was worth the money, and were said to be relieved when Tottenham swooped in.

Now, even Messi is no longer at Barcelona, and the Spanish giants missed out on having two of the best current Argentines together in Catalonia.

Nevertheless, Tottenham fans won’t care one bit.

Barcelona’s stubbornness allowed them to sign a fantastic footballer, who will surely only get better after a strong start to life in English football.
