An Arsenal academy product got some good news today.
Well, sort of.
Donyell Malen has officially been named in the provisional Netherlands squad for the World Cup in Qatar.
The 23-year-old Borussia Dortmund attacker was sold by Arsenal as a teen in 2017 and was snapped up by PSV Eindhove, where he continued building his potential.
And now, the young forward could potentially shine on the biggest stage of all.
Malen, who was sold under Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, will definitely be hoping to make the plane in November and with 19 caps under his belt already, there’s a strong chance that he will.
They tweeted out their provisional squad on Twitter today.
The Dutchman hasn’t exactly done a Serge Gnabry yet and shown up the Gunners for making such a criminal mistake in letting him go.
But Malen certainly has time on his hands and impressing at the World Cup would definitely make people question Wenger’s decision five years ago.
He was only on the North Londoners’ books for a couple of years before returning to his homeland, so it isn’t like Arsenal had him from when he was a child.
But still, it won’t reflect well on the Emirates Stadium outfit if one of their academy prospects lights up the world’s biggest competition next month and December, providing he makes the plane.
