Olympique Marseille midfielder Gerson could leave the UEFA Champions League club in January just one year after the Brazilian was linked with a move to Newcastle United.

According to L’Equipe via Ouest France, the 25-year-old could be one of many players who leaves Marseille in the winter window, with manager Igor Tudor keen to sell off some assets in order to sign new players, with former West Ham star Dimitri Payet also amongst the names who could leave the French giants.

The news could come with some interest for Newcastle, who last year, as reported by Sky Sports News, were interested in signing Gerson as PIF looked to start their regime of the Premier League club with a flurry of January signings.

Whilst Newcastle ended up passing on the £21m Marseille dynamo, Gerson’s potential exit from France in January could be of note for the Magpies, who could potentially reignite their interest in the midfielder if the Brazilian was to leave the Ligue 1 side in the coming months.

The 25-year-old was a key member of Marseille’s second-place finish in the French top-flight last season, yet with Tudor not a fan of Gerson, the midfielder leaving the club in January could present an opportunity for Newcastle, who would be suited to add a player of the Brazilian’s skillset.

Indeed, Eddie Howe would be wise to add to his midfield ranks in the upcoming transfer window, and with Gerson now seemingly available, adding another Brazilian alongside the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton would be some move from the Newcastle manager.

Newcastle’s stock as a Premier League club has risen considerably in the past few months under the PIF regime, and whilst the financial backing has help, so has the level of sensible signings the Magpies have made in the last two transfer windows. And Gerson would fit the bill for the Toon.

Elegant and versatile, Gerson would provide a lot of suitable cover in the midfield for Newcastle as they look to add to their squad in January. And with Marseille now open to a deal, the Magpies would be foolish to not at least try and bring the Brazilian to St. James Park.
