Newcastle United’s search for new signings mean they are now looking towards France with a move for Marseille midfielder Gerson.
Sky Sports report that Gerson is one of the midfielders Newcastle want to sign during the January window.
Borussia Monchengladbach ace Denis Zakaria is also wanted as he enters the final six months of his contract.
Gerson is a new link though, with the Brazilian midfielder potentially leaving Marseille just months after joining.
Marseille paid €25million (£21million) to sign Gerson from Flamengo over the summer, but he hasn’t quite lived up to expectations.
Gerson, 24, has managed three goals and two assists in 17 league games but finds himself in and out of the team of late.
Newcastle could now offer Gerson a swift exit route out of Marseille as they desperately seek new additions for Eddie Howe.
Who is Newcastle target Gerson?
Gerson emerged with Fluminense before heading to Roma in 2016. A loan spell to Fiorentina followed in 2018, but Gerson returned to Brazil in 2019 with Flamengo.

Gerson really hit top form with Flamengo, winning two league titles and the Copa Libertadores.
Over in Brazil, Gerson was even praised for having ‘more brilliance than Sergio Busquets’ by pundits on TV.
The belief was that Gerson impacted games more than Busquets and could conjure up moments of magic.
Newcastle may now hope Gerson can bring that magic to Tyneside having so far failed to really settle with Lyon.
