Tottenham Hotspur defender Destiny Udogie is now worth more than Chelsea’s summer signing Moises Caicedo off the back of an exceptional start to life in the Premier League.

Destiny Udogie recently signed a new contract at Spurs keeping him at the club until the summer of 2030.

In a study done by the CIES Football Observatory, the 100 most valuable players in the world were revealed with three Tottenham stars making the list.

Tottenham star Udogie worth more than Caicedo

So much has been made this season of the money spent by Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea.

Since buying the club, Todd Boehly has spent more money than any other owner and so far doesn’t have much to show for it.

His biggest outlay in the summer was Moises Caicedo and after a lengthy transfer saga, he eventually arrived at Stamford Bridge for £115m.

It was a huge fee and on his debut against West Ham, he gave away a penalty in a defeat to West Ham.

In stark contrast, Ange Postecoglou threw Udogie straight into the starting line-up against Brentford on the opening day of the season and he’s gone from strength to strength since then.

Udogie one of the Premier League’s most impressive new faces

The 21-year-old Italian arrived at Spurs last season under Antonio Conte before being sent out on loan to Udinese.

He looked like the archetypal Conte player, a left wing-back who bombs down the wing and fires in cross for forwards as part of a patient build-up.

The transformation under Postecoglou has been extraordinary and is a credit to both the player and the coach.

He’s now an inverted full-back playing in a four-man defence but frequently popping up as a number ten.

Andy Townsend described him as a ‘genuine powerhouse’ against Brighton last week and watching him it’s easy to see why.

Chelsea appear to have overpaid for £115m star

According to the CIES, Destiny Udogie is now worth more than four times the £15m fee Tottenham paid for him in 2022.

Udogie’s value has reached £67.5m, which is £400,000 more than the Ecuadorian international playing at Stamford Bridge.

Caicedo’s £67.1m value suggests Chelsea have already lost more than £50m on their second-most expensive signing.

Enzo Fernandez has retained his value much better (worth £106.6m compared to his initial £106.8m fee), but his midfield partner’s poor start to life in West London has really cost him.

The contrasting fortunes of Udogie and Caicedo this season mirror how Tottenham and Chelsea have coped under their respective new managers.

While Ange Postecoglou continues to battle on with a threadbare team, Pochettino is still searching for answers in his bloated, youthful squad.
