Former super-agent Jon Smith cannot believe that Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea paid £115 million to bring Moises Caicedo to Stamford Bridge.
Jon Smith, who was an agent to Argentine legend Diego Maradona among others, has written in CaughtOffside that he called Brighton and Hove Albion CEO Paul Barber after he told Moises Caicedo to Chelsea for £115 million.
Smith has joked that Barber should get a Knighthood for the amount of money he got from Chelsea for Caicedo.
According to Sky Sports, former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea paid a British-record fee of £115 million for the 21-year-old Ecuador international midfielder.
Former agent verdict on Chelsea signing Moises Caicedo
Smith wrote: “I also thought Brighton had an absolutely stunning window. To buy Caicedo for £4.5m and sell him a year later for £115m…
“I had to call Paul Barber (Brighton’s Managing Director) and say to him “oh my god, you know a few years back I was fortunate enough to get an OBE… for what you’ve just done, you should get a Knighthood!”
“He just laughed. Stunning business.
“You could say Brighton were playing hardball but that would be buying for £4.5m and selling for £40m, not £115m!”

We believe that Chelsea have overpaid for Moises Caicedo.
Yes, Caicedo has a lot of potential.
And yes, the defensive midfielder is only 21 now and will improve in the coming years.
But, he has had just one good season in the Premier League.
We do not think that Caicedo is worth £115 million.
If the Ecuadorian were really that good, then a club like Real Madrid would have signed him.
Madrid did not.
Even Manchester City would have been all over Caicedo.
They were not.
Caicedo has made 48 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career.
The defensive midfielder has scored two goals and given two assists in those matches.
