Everton are said to be looking at Belgium World Cup boss Roberto Martinez as a replacement for Frank Lampard.

That is according to Belgian news outlet Het Belang van Limburg, who believe the Toffees are considering an approach for the man they sacked in 2016.

What’s the story?

Well, Everton currently find themselves 17th in the Premier League – just four points off the bottom – after a dreadful start to the campaign, which has seen them win just three of their 15 games so far.

As a result, those in the boardroom at Goodison Park are looking at hiring Martinez, although it initially looked to be a difficult task as the 49-year-old was locked into a contract with Belgium.

However, after Belgium crashed out of the World Cup following a 0-0 draw with Croatia earlier today, the Spaniard has now revealed that he will step down from the role.

As quoted by the Independent, a tearful Martinez said: “That was my last game. It’s emotional as you can imagine.”

Martinez had been in charge of Belgium for six years, guiding them to third place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and held the No.1 ranking across world football for almost four years.

Everton must move for Roberto Martinez

Of course, many people would question Everton if they went back and rehired a manager they sacked in 2016, although Martinez is a much better coach than he was back then.

The likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid have even discussed hiring the Spaniard during his time in charge of Belgium, and we believe he is a substantially better manager than Lampard is.

As things stand, Everton find themselves in real danger of being relegated to the Championship.

If Lampard cannot turn the situation around when Premier League football gets back underway, then Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright should swoop quickly to rehire Martinez, especially as there are few attractive options out there.
