Newcastle target Jack Harrison is now close to signing a new contract at Leeds after deciding against a deadline day exit.

What’s the story?

Well, it was TEAMtalk who claimed that Eddie Howe admires the Leeds No.11 and wanted to bring him to Tyneside.

However, it seems Harrison will now be staying at Leeds after a shock U-turn.

According to Sky Sports, the 26-year-old was actually undergoing a medical at Leicester on deadline day ahead of a move to the King Power Stadium, before Leeds phoned him to match the improved salary on offer in the Midlands.

Harrison accepted the offer from Leeds, and is now close to signing a new contract at Elland Road.

It signals an end to the transfer speculation involving Leeds, Leicester and Newcastle, with an exit now highly unlikely to happen anytime soon barring any major shocks.

In our view, Leeds have made the right decision.

Harrison is a superb footballer, who has been a standout for Leeds in the Premier League since his £11m move from Manchester City in 2021, following a fantastic loan spell in Yorkshire.

In 88 Premier League appearances for the Whites, the Stoke-born winger has scored 17 goals while also providing 13 assists, which represents a solid return.

Newcastle already sorted as Harrison stays at Leeds

Of course, it would have been nice for Newcastle to have someone like Harrison at St James’ Park, as he represents a significant upgrade on the likes of Jacob Murphy and Ryan Fraser.

However, the Magpies already found themselves a new winger in Anthony Gordon, who arrived from Everton for a sum of £45m.

Harrison would have been a lot cheaper – Leicester agreed a fee of £20m with Leeds before the deal collapsed – but Gordon represents a younger, more long-term investment for Newcastle.

Be sure to keep an eye on the situation, as Leeds should officially announce the contract extension shortly.
