Emotional Inter captain Javier Zanetti returned to action after six months out injured as the Nerazzuri saw off Livorno 2-0.
Inter’s 40-year-old captain Javier Zanetti came back from a six-month injury lay-off during a 2-0 win over Livorno and couldn’t hide his delight at making an unlikely recovery.
Zanetti made Serie A appearance number 604 having fought off an Achilles tendon injury that many thought would end the veteran’s career.
The Argentine full-back has become a symbol of Inter since signing from Banfield in 1995 and continues to defy his age and remain a key component in the defence.
The fans gave Zanetti with a hero’s welcome and Inter delivered a much-needed win courtesy of Francesco Bardi’s comical own goal and a Yuto Nagatomo half-volley.
“I’m feeling very emotional because it’s not easy to get back after an injury of this kind,” Zanetti told Sky Sport after the final whistle.
“After the operation I dreamed of playing at least one more game in front of our fans and I managed it.
“I want to thank everyone who helped me from the medics to the fans, I won’t forget anyone. I couldn’t ask for more.”
Zanetti also revealed that he had received a message of encouragement from former boss and current Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.
“He sent me a text in which he said good luck and that he was sure I would return,” he explained. “It never crossed my mind to give up.”
