Does Wilfried Zaha’s belief Frank de Boer should have been given “more time” reflect even more badly on Crystal Palace’s board?
Wilfried Zaha of Crystal Palace looks on during a Pre Season Friendly against FC Schalke 04.
Wilfried Zaha thinks that Frank de Boer should have been given “more time” after being sacked as Crystal Palace manager after just four games in charge.
Zaha is currently sidelined with a knee injury suffered in the opening day defeat to Huddersfield Town and therefore had to watch on as the Eagles lost their all four games under De Boer without scoring a single goal.
Frank de Boer during is time as the manager of Crystal Palace.
“I slightly think he should’ve got a bit more time because it’s not easy to transition from how we used to play to the way we play now,” the winger was quoted by the Daily Mail.
“But football’s ruthless and if you’re not getting the results you get fired. So it’s a thing where you just have to accept it.”
Roy Hodgson, manager of Crystal Palace, looks on prior to the Carabao Cup Third Round match against Huddersfield Town.
Roy Hodgson was named as De Boer’s replacement but also lost his first league tie in charge, 1-0 at home to Southampton, and now faces the daunting task of Manchester City and Manchester United away and then Chelsea at home.
Yet while Zaha is being understandably diplomatic about the dismissal of his former Dutch boss, does his belief that the 47-year-old should have had more time only further reflect badly on the Palace board?
After all, they had plenty of time following Sam Allardyce’s announcement that he was retiring from football at the end of last season and therefore presumably researched De Boer and his tactical style.
Results weren’t good admittedly, but to then sack that appointment after four matches is a decision that has received plenty of criticism, perhaps even from some of the players themselves it seems.
