Dinamo Zagreb club president Mirko Barisic has said he is delighted the club were able to hang onto Dani Olmo in the summer.
The Spain under-21 international became one of Europe’s most wanted young players after helping his country win the European Championships.
Spanish newspaper Sport claimed Tottenham were strongly interested, linking them with a £36 million move, while lesser known publication Mucho Deporte claimed Spurs were close to agreeing a fee.
Zagreb decided not to sell the attacking midfielder, and Barisic is confident the club made the right choice.
He told TMW: “There were so many requests this summer but we decided to keep him at Dinamo for the desire to achieve good results in the Champions League. I think it was a good decision for both, both for him and for us.”
Zagreb battled through the qualifying stages to reach the group phase, with Olmo playing a crucial role.
The 21-year-old scored three goals and provided three assists in five qualifying games.
He now has a stage to really make a name for himself, with Zagreb drawn in Manchester City’s group.
This is a chance for Tottenham and interested teams to really see what he is made of, and for Zagreb it could be very profitable if he performs, and his reputation and transfer value soar.
