Yussuf Poulsen has eight assists already for Bundesliga high-flyers RB Leipzig – but is he heading to the Premier League with Everton or Newcastle United?
Wolfsburg have conceded just five goals in nine Bundesliga games since Oliver Glasner took over during the summer. So it’s fair to say few saw a 6-1 thrashing by RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal coming.
On Wednesday night, Leipzig strolled into the Wolves’ den and tamed the beast with a display of ruthless finishing and a carousel of relentless, whirring movement. There was two for Timo Werner, one each for Emil Forsberg, Conrad Laimer and the exceptional Marcel Sabitzer, plus a Jeffrey Bruma own goal.
But while Yussuf Poulsen didn’t manage to get his name on the already-crowded scoresheet, the Danish forward did make his mark in a remarkable result with two second half assists as Julien Nagelsmann’s side blew Wolfsburg away.
There was a beautiful first-touch pass which set Laimer up for the simplest of finishes and, just seven minutes later, he laid on Werner’s first with the most composed of defence splitting passes.
Poulsen might have scored just once all season but he now has eight assists to his name – not bad for a man whose played just 13 times.
And it was the sort of performance which explains why both Newcastle United and Everton are apparently interested in luring the long-serving forward during the January transfer window, according to the Express.
Newcastle are lacking cutting edge and quality in the final third and Poulsen, with 20 goals and 16 assists since the start of last season, could be the difference maker at St James’ Park. Everton, too, would certainly benefit from that extra dash of ruthlessness in attack.
