The young Chinese star left West Bromwich Albion to join Werder Bremen on loan in the summer.

Yuning Zhang’s loan spell with Werder Bremen could be cut short, according to the Bundesliga side’s Sporting Director Frank Baumann, who told German media outlet Weser Kurier that the Chinese star’s lack of games means that remaining with the club makes little sense.

The 21-year-old joined the Baggies from Dutch side Vitesse is the summer of 2017, but was immediately sent out to Bremen on a two-year loan deal.

Zhang has failed to make an appearance so far in Germany, though, which has totally defeated the object of him leaving the Hawthorns on loan in the first place.

Bremen’s Sporting Director spoke to reporters today, and admitted that the Chinese star could be sent back to the Black Country sooner than first thought, as quoted by German publication Weser Kurier:

“We’re trying to find a solution that Yuning plays in the U23s, so if that does not work, we’ll have to deal with other options. Yuning has not played for a whole year, so another season would make little sense.”

Considering the Baggies’ current plight, bringing Zhang back for the remainder of the season would serve little purpose, as Alan Pardew would be unlikely to throw him into what is already an extremely difficult situation.

Zhang seems to be left in limbo somewhat, and quite what the future holds for him remains to be seen.
