Paul Merson suggested that Liverpool’s celebrations went too far after their 2-0 win over Arsenal on Wednesday night by warning them that they are chasing down ‘one of the best teams in the world’, as he told Sky Sports PL (16/03/22 at 10:20 pm).
The outspoken Sky pundit added that ‘nothing really has changed’ regarding the Premier League title race between Liverpool and Manchester City.
After securing a pretty tough three points at in-form Arsenal, the Reds are now one point behind the current leaders and the players let it all out, including their manager, after the full-time whistle.
Nonetheless, last night’s result is an even added boost because Manchester City dropped points away at Crystal Palace on Monday night.
But, Merson warned Liverpool about the current leaders and was asked about the away side’s celebrations at the Emirates after the game.
“Write Man City off at your peril, nothing really has changed,” said Merson. “Liverpool have got to win every game. It’s still one point and they are playing Liverpool at home.
“If Man City win every game and draw with Liverpool, then they win the Premier League. It’s not in their (Liverpool’s) hands.
On whether Liverpool’s celebrations are going too far: “Of course. It’s a big celebration because it’s a big game. They have come to Arsenal, who couldn’t be playing any better, so it was a big football match.
“But you got to remember. You are chasing down one of the best teams in the world of football still. You are one point behind. I know they can go top if they beat Watford. Let’s not forget, I know they drew with Palace, but it’s not like it doesn’t look like they are going to score a goal – I’d rather be Man City.”
Liverpool are now in a situation where if they win their remaining nine Premier League games, then they will be champions.
Whilst it still seems like a lot of work, and it is, the key thing here is that they are more than capable of producing such a run of wins.
But, the big one of them all is, of course, that trip to the Etihad next month that might just be the decider.
If the Merseyside giants leave empty-handed, then another title could be headed Man City’s way, if not, then something special might just about to happen for Klopp and his players again.
