Former French World Cup winner Youri Djorkaeff has had his say on compatriot Paul Pogba’s underwhelming season at Manchester United.
Despite scoring 16 goals and assisting 11 more, Paul Pogba has been heavily criticised by fans and pundits alike for his performances this season.
The Frenchman had a troubled relationship with former United boss Jose Mourinho under whom he had a terrible first half of the season. However, Pogba reminded everybody why he is so highly rated with an incredible start to life under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The 26-year-old’s form dipped again in the latter stages of the season where, apart from two penalties against West Ham, he failed to register a single goal or assist in Manchester United’s last 10 games in the Premier League.
However, Youri Djorkaeff has leapt into the defence of his compatriot, claiming that Pogba needed a year to recover from winning the World Cup with France before the start of the season.
The former Inter Milan star said: “When you win a World Cup, the following year is usually difficult for everyone, not only Pogba.
“For any world champion, the impact is such that you need a year [to get over it]. Next year, Pogba should reach an even better level.”
The former World Champion also claimed that Pogba will show his qualities at Old Trafford next season, better than he could under Jose Mourinho this term.
However, Pogba’s future in Manchester United is up in the air after increasing speculation over a move to La Liga giants Real Madrid in the upcoming summer transfer window.
