Darren Bent has claimed that the potential ‘worry’ for Newcastle United is that if Kieran Trippier had a choice, he would join Chelsea over the Saudi-owned club, as he told talkSPORT.

It was put to the former Premier League striker that Trippier, who is rumoured to be Newcastle’s first signing, could possibly be on Chelsea’s radar following Reece James’ injury.

Trippier is currently working his magic on the flanks of Atletico Madrid and it seems as though he will be heading back to the Premier League during the January transfer window.

There have been strong rumours that Newcastle are close to signing him and how he could be the first purchase of the new era in the north east, as reported by Sky Sports.

But Bent thinks, ‘regardless of what Newcastle give you’, if he had a choice, then he heads to Stamford Bridge, rather than St James’ Park.

“The only thing which is a worry for Newcastle,” said Bent. “Not Aubameyang, but the Trippier one.

“You just think, for Keiran Trippier, if he has the choice to go to Newcastle or Chelsea, depending on how long Reece James is out for, I think he goes to Chelsea, regardless of what Newcastle give you. You are going to go to Chelsea.”

For once, in a very long while, Newcastle fans can dream big in the transfer market and not think about picking up the empty crisp packet flying around St James’ Park.

Their relegation dogfight will play a part in the level of player they can purchase, but possibly signing Trippier would be a statement.

In the summer, he was representing England at Euro 2020 and he has every experience in the world, including winning the La Liga title last season.

But if Eddie Howe can get him through Newcastle’s doors, then he is probably just the start of several players they will look to bring in this month.
