Michael Owen has blamed Joe Gomez for the goal Liverpool conceded in their Champions League rout last night.
Liverpool, who won this competition in 2019, smashed five goals away to Porto on matchday two of the tournament.
But the Reds’ clean sheat was spoiled when Mehdi Taremi headed home a consolation goal to make it 3-1.
Gomez, who replaced James Milner at right-back 10 minutes earlier, got the wrong side of the big Iranian striker who just needed to make contact with the cross.
Here’s what Owen told BT Sport at full time: “He should have [done better]. Once he got the wrong side of him, there’s no way back – certainly with a centre-forward of that size. If you get the wrong side, you’re pinned and you’re a goner. He [Gomez] squeezed out on the wrong side.”
Headache
It’ll be interesting to see what Jurgen Klopp does on Sunday.
Liverpool host Premier League champions Manchester City at Anfield and with Trent Alexander-Arnold set to miss out with injury, Klopp has a big decision at right-back.
He started Milner in that role in Portugal and although the vetetan ulility player impressed, he is also 35 and defending against Pep Guardiola’s side is unenviable at the best of times, even for much younger players.
That being said, the Liverpool boss clearly trusts Milner implicitly and with Gomez’s error last night, that might’ve cemented the former England international as the man to face City this weekend.
Gomez, who earns £75,000 per week on Merseyside, is much more effective in the middle, as a central defender, and it would be a gamble to use him as Alexander-Arnold’s deputy on Sunday.
