A teenage Maltese goalkeeper has explained how Sheffield United were able to sign him from under the noses of Sheffield Wednesday.
Previously of Floriana back in his homeland, 17-year-old Christopher Farrugia told MalteseFootball.com at the end of last month that he will continue his career with the Blades this coming campaign.
That is despite having spent time on trial with Sheffield Wednesday.
But according to Farrugia, Sheffield United were keeping a close eye on him even then.
“Sheffield United monitored my trial with Wednesday closely, there were even United scouts during my first game with Wednesday,” he told the website
“After my one week trial with Wednesday, United made it clear that they were keen for me to sign with them, they then offered me a scholarship with the club and I accepted.”
This will be Farrugia’s first full-time venture abroad, having played all of his previous club football with Floriana.
And he had trained wirh the seniors there despite his young age.
“Hopefully this step up will shape my footballing career and especially with United becoming a Premier League team this will help me learn from more great players that will be at the club,” he added.
“With the facilities like United’s and all the tools one needs to improve and grow as a player, I am confident about my move to Bramall Lane.”
Sheffield United are not currently short of young goalkeeping talent, with Jake Eastwood pushing the first team and Marcus Dewhurst recently representing England’s Under-18s.
