Ex-Tottenham star Ryan Mason raved about Mauricio Pochettino when speaking exclusively to Sky Sports, praising the Argentine for the influence that he had on him as both a footballer and a human being.

Mason spent eight years at Spurs before joining Hull City in the summer of 2016, but the 26-year-old has unfortunately been forced to retire from the game, after suffering a serious head injury when playing for the Tigers against Chelsea in January 2017.

The midfielder’s retirement is a real shame for him and his club, as he will never get the opportunity to show just how good he could have become.

Mason spoke exclusively to Sky Sports about what he learned under the tutelage of Pochettino at Tottenham, highlighting how important he has been to his development as a human being, as well as a footballer:

Ryan Mason of Hull City arrives prior to during the Premier League match between Hull City and Crystal Palace at KCOM Stadium on December 10, 2016 in Hull, England.

“You love playing for him, you’d run through a brick wall for him because he’s a lovely man and a lovely human being. Don’t get me wrong I would never, ever cross him because his morals and values are so strong that if you went away from that it would be hard for him to forget it. Probably the biggest thing that I can say about him is that he didn’t just improve me as a player, he improved me as a human being. He just changed my view on life through his values – he’s a big family man, he loves creating friendship and values loyalty.”

Pochettino is widely considered to be one of the best managers in world football, and it is evidently clear that all of the Spurs players have the utmost respect for the Argentine.

If he is to achieve truly elite status, however, he needs to guide his side to major honours sooner rather than later, and with Tottenham’s place in the last four of the FA Cup safely secured, he might very well attain that this season.
