Danny Murphy has claimed that ‘from a footballing perspective’ James Maddison would pick Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United over Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur.

The reasons highlighted was the fact that Newcastle United are in the Champions League, and in comparison to Tottenham, they will be for ‘most years from now’, whilst also adding in the financial element, as he told talkSPORT.

Tottenham are struggling to pay ‘£40 million’ for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, so when there are suggestions that Leicester City want ‘£60 million’ for their relegated player, then it will leave Daniel Levy having sleepless nights.

There are mixed messages coming out about the 26-year-old’s future, who certainly has admires at Hotspur Way and St James’ Park.

On one hand, it’s claimed that Newcastle are ‘leading the race’ for his signature, but then it’s Spurs amid the player’s desire to make a move to London.

Either way, Murphy broke down where Maddison could go, as he also factored in location.

“If you look at Maddison, for example, Newcastle and Tottenham, if that is an option,” said Murphy. “Newcastle are in the Champions League and very likely to be there most years from now. Yes (more so than Spurs).

“Are you going to sacrifice playing in the Champions League? Money-wise, you would say Newcastle and Tottenham would be there or thereabouts for Maddison, maybe Newcastle would pay more with the owners. So, from a footballing perspective, you would be going to Newcastle.

“On a location, you would say most people favour London over Newcastle. It’s not something against Newcastle, it’s just the way it is. That would depend on Maddison’s ambition and what he wants from his life.”

Who should Maddison sign for? Newcastle or Tottenham?

That relegation with Leicester would have stung because players like Maddison have to take responsibility for what was quite an abject season.

With the ball, there wasn’t any worries about what the Foxes were doing, it’s the mess they produced without it and how they defended without the ball.

But still, Maddison gets his plaudits, which is why he will get this big-money move, with Danny Murphy also previously labelling him a ‘very rare’ player.
