Speaking to OTB, Mark Lawrenson has shared some insight into Everton Football Club, claiming that he’s been told that the wage bill at Goodison Park is ridiculous.

It’s fair to say that Everton have been mismanaged financially over the past few years. They’ve thrown good money after bad at some very underwhelming players, and they’re still paying the price for their poor recruitment.

Transfer fees have been wasted over the past few years, but sadly, Everton are still paying out huge wages to players who, quite simply, aren’t earning their keep.

Lawrenson says that he’s been told by some employees at Everton that the wage bill is actually beyond belief, stating that we’d be amazed if we knew the true extent of the Toffees’ spending.

What’s Lawrenson said?

The pundit shared what he’s been told about the Merseyside club’s wage bill.

“I do know, because I know a couple of lads who work at Everton, some of the wages at that club are just mad. The problem is that you’re not going to be able to get those players out unless you pay them to leave, and that’s a really bad position to find yourself in,” Lawrenson said.

“It’s really big money, you can understand why, he (Moshiri) came in and made a statement. They’re buying players and they’re paying them massive wages. You’d be amazed, you’d be amazed at their wage bill.”

Impossible job

We certainly don’t envy any manager that is thinking about taking the Everton job.

The Toffees have an absolutely massive wage bill, and as Lawrenson says, there are certain players they simply won’t be able to get rid of.

The squad is underperforming, and it may be incredibly hard for even the best manager in the world to get them out of this rut.

Everton need to hit the reset button in the next few years and start to build again.
