Joao Fonseca and Jakub Mensik gave fans a thrilling night session at Roland Garros, with the Czech player coming through in straight sets.
Mensik fought his way past Fonseca in front of the Paris crowd, taking their quarter-final clash 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(7-3).
He will now face ATP number three Alexander Zverev in the Roland Garros semi-finals. Meanwhile, Fonseca is left to reflect on what might have been in a tournament where we’re guaranteed to see a new Grand Slam champion.
The Brazilian teenager has taken to social media to share his thoughts on the tournament, and despite falling short against Mensik, he remains positive about his overall performance.

He said: “It wasn’t meant to be, all credit goes to [Jakub Mensik] but I lived a dream at Roland Garros. It was a super positive tournament, which gives me even more confidence and conviction in my tennis.”
“Thank you, everyone, for the support. Time to recharge for the grass season”. And his opponent was quick to respond in kind, with Mensik commenting: “Many more big battles to come my friend!”
Their exchanges reflect a mutual respect and excitement about what lies ahead in their careers.
“Grand Slam semi-final… what a feeling. So grateful for all the support and the incredible energy out here”, Mensik wrote.

And wishing his rival well, Fonseca commented: “Good luck, bro. Go for it.”
Joao Fonseca and Jakub Mensik receive praise after Roland Garros clash
Their potential has been a talking point on social media since the match, catching the attention of a familiar name in tennis circles.
Rick Macci, who once coached Serena Williams, took to X with his signature style, writing: “Fonseca was a few milliseconds slow against Mensik. All the battles before this Paris street fight, I could see, flipped the movement script ever so slightly.”
“Mensik as I said last year, barring injury, is a top 3 player and for sure will bag a few Slams. The Brazilian Blaster [will] also grab a few majors because he pulls the trigger to go bigger on the biggest stage, and that spells champion in my page.”
Nepita responded to images of both players training together ahead of the tournament: “Future champions,” while another added: “They’re incredible talents.”
The duo is still chasing their first major title, but their quarter-final runs at Roland Garros marked career bests at Grand Slam level. Mensik has now gone one step further, looking to spring an upset against Zverev in hopes of reaching his first final.
