Martin Keown criticised Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno on BT Sport 2 (7:50pm, October 22, 2020), and suggested that letting Emiliano Martinez leave for Aston Villa could have been a mistake.
The Arsenal legend was not impressed with the mistake that Leno made during the Gunners’ 2-1 win against Rapid Vienna away form home in the Europa League Group B on Thursday evening.
The Germany international goalkeeper gave the ball away inside the box cheaply, and Taxiarchis Fountas made no mistake in scoring.
However, Mikel Arteta’s side scored twice thereafter to pick up all three points from the encounter.
Arsenal sold Martinez to Premier League rivals Aston Villa in the summer transfer window despite the Argentine goalkeeper doing well in the final weeks of last season when Leno was injured.
Keown said on BT Sport 2 (7:50pm, October 22, 2020): “Having let Martinez go who was magnificent, you see Leno making these types of mistakes, you wonder whether they made the right call. It was a difficult night for Leno.”

Moving on
Martinez was very good for Arsenal in the final weeks of last season, and the Argentine is playing well for Villa at the moment.
True, Leno made a big mistake in Austria on Thursday evening and had a generally poor game, but he is a very good goalkeeper.
The 28-year-old will have to put the mistake he made against Vienna behind him and move on.
