Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Michail Antonio has been discussing his miss against Manchester City over the weekend.
Antonio had a great opportunity to score West Ham’s third goal as he squandered a one-on-one against Ederson in the second-half, but after rewatching the chance, Antonio noticed something.
Indeed, the Jamaican says that he should have actually have taken an extra touch and whipped the ball rather than trying to dink the goalkeeper, stating that Aymeric Laporte’s run across was actually a dash towards goal in an attempt to make the clearance.

Antonio spoke about his miss.
“You watch it back 1,000 times and think what should I have done differently? When I watched it back, Laporte was coming across but he stopped and was going towards the goal, I’ve not looked at him, I took one look and made my decision, but I should’ve taken another look and noticed that he didn’t come towards me, so I could’ve taken it onto my right foot and whipped it around the goalkeeper,” Antonio said.

Hindsight is 20/20
This is what separates the good players from the great players.
Is Antonio good enough to score a one-on-one in this situation? Of course he is, but sadly, he didn’t have the quick thinking to assess the situation in milliseconds and he rushed his shot towards goal.
A truly great striker would have been able to have mapped out the situation and spotted Laporte’s run or even have spotted Pablo Fornals’ late dash into the final third and laid the ball off.
We can’t blame Antonio for this miss, but it could prove to be costly for West Ham in their hunt for a Europa League spot.
