Jamie Redknapp says Daniel Levy will never buy players such as West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice, but teams like Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are pushing for his signature.

The Tottenham chairman has come under serious stick for the running of Spurs, with Redknapp stating that if they want to take that next step, then they need to buy the ‘big players’, such as Declan Rice.

In the summer, the England international, who Ian Wright called ‘world-class’, is expected to be a hot topic of discussion ahead of a possible move.

Arsenal have booked their Champions League ticket for the following campaign, but the same can’t be said for their north London rivals, who did pip them to fourth last season.

All of that seems a long time ago now, with Antonio Conte out of the door and Levy sacking yet another trophy-laden coach who leaves empty-handed.

Nonetheless, that struggle continues for Spurs, as Jamie Redknapp used their transfer business as an example and Arsenal’s interest in Declan Rice, as he told Sky Sports News.

“I do believe that they are never quite in the mix, for what I would call the big players,” said Redknapp. “The blue-chip players you want to sign if Tottenham are ever going to achieve, then I think that has to change.

“They won’t be in for the likes of Declan Rice, whether he would go to Tottenham, but they (those who run the club) don’t necessarily go for the players that are going to cost that much.

“You talk about Arsenal wanting to go for those players. I don’t think that’s Tottenham’s sort of style. It’s never going to be, I believe, whilst Daniel Levy is in charge.”

WILL ARSENAL SIGN RICE?

Jorginho may have arrived in January, but it’s pretty clear to all that Arteta is looking to add long-term depth to his midfield and a player of a defensive brain.

Someone like Rice ticks that box, with recent suggestions by Kevin Campbell that ‘talks are on-going’ for the England midfielder with the Gunners.

If Arsenal get their man, then it will only continue to grow this young, vibrant, forward-thinking and fearless side Arteta is building, which of course, will be the envy of their neighbours.
