Paul Merson says he would bet his ‘life’ that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will finish above Fulham in the Premier League this season, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (28/02/23 at 7:35 pm).
This comes after Sky presenter Jules Warren was trying his utmost best to fight Fulham’s corner and how they could possibly secure a Champions League finish, Europa League finish or finish above Liverpool in May – or do at least two of those things.
When Merson debunked those suggestions, he fired back at his fellow colleague by stating that he is only pushing this because ‘you support Everton’.
After an error-prone goalless draw against Crystal Palace over the weekend, Liverpool will now welcome relegation-strugglers Wolves to Anfield on Wednesday night.
This is the Merseyside giant’s game in hand and their chance to move into sixth spot, ahead of Fulham, who are on 39 points and have played two games more, at this moment in time.
Nonetheless, whilst Merson feels Marco Silva has done very well at Fulham this season, there is no chance he can see the London side finishing above Klopp’s men.
“They are three points ahead of Liverpool and Liverpool have two games in hand,” laughed Merson. “I don’t bet anymore, but I would have my life on Liverpool finishing above Fulham. Seriously!?
“It’s going to be hard (for Fulham to get into Europe). This is a prime example of a team that are comfortable. Never going to get relegated. Top-half team, then have a go in the cup. It quickly changes. Have a look at their next three fixtures (Brentford, Arsenal and Liverpool). That tells you something straight away.
“I know why you said that about Liverpool now because you support Everton.”
Jules Warren responded: “I was putting the cause forward for Fulham because it just strikes me that everyone has just written them off and they are just going to finish mid-table.”
CAN LIVERPOOL SALVAGE THEIR SEASON?
Whilst Liverpool are still in the Champions League, even the most ardent of fan understands that tie against Real Madrid is over after Carlo Ancelotti’s men put five past them at Anfield.
The main aim now is to try and salvage as much as possible from the season and that’s securing fourth spot and Champions League football.
First of all, Liverpool need to start going on a winning run for that to happen, added to winning their games in hand.
If that happens, then they will be three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, who are yet to visit Anfield this season.
