Matt Targett has claimed that ‘you see the glimpses of the player he was’ when Steven Gerrard joins in Aston Villa training, as he told Amazon Prime Sport.

The Villa left-back shared that Gerrard joins in with the boys ‘now and then’ and it’s ‘really enjoyable’ when he gets his boots dirty.

It hasn’t been that long since Gerrard hung up his boots and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he embarrasses a few of the players at Bodymoor Heath.

For the current Villa players, Gerrard would have been on their screens as kids scoring memorable headers in Istanbul or tracer bullet shots in FA Cup finals.

This is what Targett had to say about his new manager joining in during Aston Villa training.

“Every now and then, he joins in,” said Targett. “You see glimpses of the player he was, so it is really enjoyable when he joins in.”

Gerrard will be hoping his players can muster up the magic he used to produce in the FA Cup as a Liverpool player.

Villa travel to Old Trafford for the second time this season for a third-round clash, their previous visit was a 1-0 win under Dean Smith.

And now they have a chance to put their name into the fourth round and beat an out-of-form and under-pressure Manchester United side.

Given his Liverpool past, Gerrard isn’t exactly going to get the warmest of welcomes, but he will be hoping to be the one celebrating at the end of the match.
