Crystal Palace manager news has began to trend after the south Londoners decided to sack Patrick Vieira.

The likes of Vincent Kompany and Michael Carrick have been mentioned by the Guardian as potential replacements.

Now, Darren Ambrose – who made 124 appearances for Crystal Palace – has shared what those inside Selhurst Park have told him.

Well, the 39-year-old told Sky Sports: “I’ve tried reaching out to a few people at the club, and they’ve said a decision won’t be made until after the Arsenal game, but short-term, you might see a return of Shaun Derry.

“I think Paddy McCarthy (is also in contention). He’s the Under-23 manager, old teammate of mine, old captain of mine as well. Those two will get the team going for the Arsenal game. They know what it’s like to play for the football club.”

The Athletic believe Vieira removed Derry from his backroom staff earlier this season after growing frustrated at the 45-year-old’s more vocal, aggressive approach, which clashed with his preference to do things calmly.

By the sounds of it, Steve Parish made the decision to sack Vieira without having an immediate replacement in mind.

The Frenchman received his P45 after overseeing 12 games without a win for Crystal Palace, with the Eagles yet to taste victory in any competition so far in 2023.

Crystal Palace have also scored just nine goals from open play this term – according to WhoScored – the lowest of any Premier League side.

Crystal Palace have taken a risk

In our view, it is a huge gamble to sack Vieira without having a replacement in mind.

Just look at Leeds and Southampton. The pair fired Jesse Marsch and Nathan Jones respectively without having a replacement lined up, and were left scraping around with few options out there.

Eventually, Leeds hired Javi Gracia, while Southampton decided to promote Ruben Selles from within after failing to find a replacement.

By the sounds of it, Derry or McCarthy could be given a similar opportunity if Crystal Palace fail to find a suitable replacement for Vieira soon – be sure to keep an eye on the situation.
