Stevie Nicol has once again been left baffled by why Arsenal and Mikel Arteta decided to buy Kai Havertz from Chelsea.

The Liverpool legend stated that if things don’t start well for Kai Havertz, then Mikel Arteta might feel that he has made a ‘mistake’ and then ‘you might never see him again’, as he told ESPN.

It’s a bit far-fetched from the pundit, but there is a lot of pressure on the German’s shoulders upon his arrival, as Nicol doesn’t think that Havertz will start for Arsenal.

Many think the 24-year-old will challenge Gabriel Jesus for a starting spot, as well as possibly play across the front three, in the number ten role, and perhaps, the number eight position.

Granit Xhaka is heading for the exit door, so someone will have to fill that role and those currently at the club aren’t probably capable of doing so.

Either way, Havertz’s arrival has created a lot of debate and Nicol perhaps had one of the more shocking takes of them all.

“I didn’t say that (I don’t like Havertz),” said Nicol. “I said that ‘I don’t get the transfer to Arsenal’. I don’t get where he fits in and the rest of it. I didn’t say ‘I don’t like Havertz’.

“He’s not getting 18 goals. I would love to see how he gets all these assists and goals because I am not sure he starts.

“There’s no way Jesus doesn’t start, right?! The front three is set. If Havertz, in his first game, if he does start in the middle, has a shocker, then you might never see him again. Arteta might go ‘you know what, I have made a big mistake. This isn’t going to work’.

“If he plays four, five or six games and, all of a sudden, Arteta goes ‘well, you know what, this isn’t too bad going forward, but defensively teams are getting at us for fun. I am going to change something here’. I am (negative towards it) because I don’t understand the signing.”

Arteta gets his man…

The one whose opinion matters most is Arteta. He wanted Havertz. He chased his as a key target and he got his man.

Just like Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White previously, their transfers were questioned, but now they are important players for the club.

Don’t write off Havertz just yet because he might just prove to be a masterstroke of a signing, especially given that his form over the last 12 months hasn’t been great.
