Tony Cascarino has blasted Newcastle’s Ryan Fraser on TalkSport (26/09/20 at 7:55 am) for coming out and once again defending his decision not to play for Bournemouth after the restart.

Fraser’s contract at Dean Court was coming to an end and he opted against extending it for the restart, which drew criticism – Bournemouth ended up getting relegated.

It doesn’t help the situation when Fraser told the Times that the Cherries would have perhaps stayed up had he not left and he doesn’t regret his decision.

Cascarino made it clear to the Scottish winger that ‘you let them down’ as he was making reference to Fraser’s actions and he didn’t hold back in what he had to say about him.

“To be honest, I have to be frank here,” Cascarino told TalkSport. “I saw Ryan Fraser play for Mick McCarthy at Ipswich when he was on-loan from Bournemouth. He was terrific. He was trying to find himself a career. He was trying to prove he was good enough to play for somebody’s first team.

“When you are reading that story [Times interview] out to me. Okay, you might have had your differences with the football club. Maybe even some of the fans and you chose not to play. You pulled out of some tackles, which you have admitted to.

“Do you know what? You let your playing colleagues down. And when players starting throwing out the old analogy of ‘that terrible injury we might have got’. That is really half-empty the glass.

“To me, it’s you could have played. You could have been the player that kept them up. You could have been a hero and left. Shared all those experienced of being in the trenches with your teammates, who you shared so much with. You let them down. It’s not just about him! You could have kept Bournemouth up. And that really frustrates me.

“To me, Ryan Fraser chose his own option at the start of last season. He might as well gone to Eddie Howe and said ‘let me go now, otherwise, I’m not going to turn up for you this year’.”

In truth, whatever club you support if Fraser had decided against completing the delayed 2019/20 season, and your team had got relegated, then those individuals now defending him would be pretty critical of the winger.

The likes of Willian and Pedro continued on for Chelsea even though the former left for rivals Arsenal, so it’s understandable why Fraser is receiving such stick.

But Fraser has made his decision and there will be a lot of spotlight on him this season. It’s pretty clear that if things don’t go well for him at St James’ Park then he’ll know about it from those who have been going at his throat.
