Dave Jones has told Monday Night Football, which was broadcast on Sky, that Liverpool’s owners FSG now have a ‘huge problem’ in James Milner.
Milner came out after Liverpool’s game against Leeds United and stated that he hoped the European Super League didn’t go ahead.
Liverpool have already signed up for the new competition, but the fierce backlash from players, pundits and even Jurgen Klopp has created doubt over whether the league will ever go ahead.
And Jones said: “Well that is hugely significant. That’s the captain of Liverpool on the night, James Milner, coming out and you heard him say it ‘I don’t like it, and I don’t want to to happen’.
“That’s a Liverpool player speaking about the involvement of the Super League which his club is ready to dive into. That’s a huge problem that the Liverpool owners have got there isn’t it?”
Carragher was also heartened by Milner’s comments after the game.

He said: “What we’ve got and what we’ve said before the game about mobilising players, managers, pundits and supporters right across this country – there’s only four people been interviewed tonight. Jurgen Klopp, James Milner, Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford and every one has said to them this idea is a joke. We need more! We need every player, every manager. We want the same message.”
Liverpool had drawn 1-1 with Leeds, but the match rather paled into insignificance.
Liverpool’s failure to land three points may damage their top four hopes, but with so much uncertainty over the Champions League next season that may be irrelevant.
Premier League clubs will meet today in an emergency meeting to discuss the next options for the league, without the input of the six breakaway clubs.
Quite what the reaction of Liverpool’s players will be in time remains to be seen.
But if FSG are to force through their plans it seems that they could face an almighty struggle, given the immediate reaction from almost all parties.
