‘You have to apologise’: Agbonlahor wants Liverpool to sign 8-goal Bundesliga man

Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Liverpool to bring back Philippe Coutinho but thinks he has to ‘apologise’ for the manner in which he left the club before he can re-join, as he told Stadium Astro.

In 2018, Liverpool sold Coutinho to Barcelona in what was one of the most expensive transfers of all time. And whilst the Brazilian has struggled since leaving Anfield, his former club have thrived.

Their Champions League triumph in Madrid last season and winning the Premier League title during this campaign is proof of that.

But former Aston Villa striker, Agbonlahor, thinks that Coutinho would become the ‘main man’ on Merseyside if he were to return.

“For me, I’d go out there and get Coutinho back,” Agbonlahor told Stadium Astro. “I’d probably say, ‘you have to apologise for the way you left, but come back’.

“For me, he is what Liverpool are missing in there. You can even play Coutinho where Firmino plays if Firmino isn’t doing it. The way Firmino plays, it looks like he is just told by Mane and Salah. ‘we are having the shots’.

“So, if you went in and bought an Aubameyang. I think that could upset the way Liverpool play because Salah and Mane wouldn’t get as many shots because Firmino is very unselfish – Coutinho needs to be the main man in the team, and at Liverpool, he would be. I think he would do a great job at Liverpool and the fans would forgive him and have him back.”

Jurgen Klopp is in a very difficult situation because not many players would get into his starting XI, so whilst they can splash the cash, those players may not be able to break into the first team.

Therefore, spending big-money on back-up players would be deemed a risk, but when it comes to Liverpool’s midfield it does seem as though some creative spark is needed.

But Coutinho might not be the answer because he has struggled to cement himself at Barcelona, who have since loaned him out to Bayern Munich.

The Brazil international has played 34 matches in all competitions for the Bundesliga club this term, scoring eight goals and supplying his teammates with eight assists. – including a goal and assist against Tottenham in the Champions League.
