‘You get frustrated’: Troy Deeney shares brutally honest thoughts on Liverpool-Everton drama

Troy Deeney has slammed the officials for how they handled Jordan Pickford’s tackle on Virgil van Dijk during Liverpool and Everton’s controversial encounter from the weekend and shared it’s getting frustrating, as he told TalkSport.

It was a heated Merseyside derby at Goodison, with both Van Dijk and Thiago being on the end of reckless challenges from Pickford and Richarlison – the latter was sent off for his actions.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, Van Dijk is now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but the added controversy is that Pickford is not going to face any retrospective action.

Deeney was pretty clear that only one group of people are to blame for what happened, as he shared his brutally honest thoughts on the incident.

“They have made the error,” Deeney told TalkSport. “It’s not like the process of it. The process is all there. You can go and say ‘go and have a look at that, it doesn’t look great’.

“If you look at it now, Virgil is probably going to be out for six-seven months and all that they got for it that it was offside. That’s really poor. It today’s game that’s really poor.

“Before VAR, it was very much like the referee’s need help and we need to give them the technology. We have given them help and technology. Now it’s like we blame the technology and not the refs. You have got to go hand in hand.

“A player makes a mistake, there is a reason why. He has to come out and speak about it. The manager would come out and speak about it, with referee’s it seems as though they are never held accountable for what they do. As players, you get frustrated, if you turned around and said ‘I got it wrong’ then no-one can say anything.”

This is an incident that is still making headlines days after the challenge and the fact that Pickford hasn’t been banned doesn’t help its cause.

At the end of the day, Jurgen Klopp will now lose his star man, for probably the rest of the season, which also blows their title chances by a big margin.

But the lack of action, both on the day and after, from officials isn’t helping the cause because they are there to protect the players, first and foremost and it seems that job isn’t being done properly.
