Peter Crouch has told BT Sport, during their live Europa League coverage, that he does fear for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks under Jose Mourinho.
Winks made a rare start for Tottenham in midfield against Ludogorets last night, and he got his name on the scoresheet in the contest.
Spurs strolled to a 4-0 victory, with Winks’s overhit pass finding the back of the net from some distance.
And Crouch feels that Winks, who is on a £50,000-a-week contract (Spotrac), is good enough to turn things around at Spurs, although he does have his worries about the England international.
“I worried for him when Mourinho first came in because you don’t necessarily think Winks is a Mourinho type player,” Crouch said.
“You think Sissoko and Hojbjerg are the two that are going to sit in there and Winks is going to have to sit in there. He’s going to have to bide his time for his opportunity.
“He’s probably in the mould of a Tottenham player from the early days, let’s say. He’s a footballer.
“Mourinho wants people who wins the ball back, and you do fear for him. But he’s such a good player you do think he’ll force his way back in.”
Mourinho actually heavily relied upon Winks last season at Spurs, but he has found things much tougher this time around.
The addition of Pierre Emile Hojbjerg and the improvements in Tanguy Ndombele’s game have pushed Winks down the pecking order.
The Telegraph have now said that the 24-year-old is actually considering his future at Spurs, unless he is given more minutes between now and January.
Tottenham’s next game comes against Chelsea at the weekend, but it seems likely that Winks will be left on the bench.
