Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, David Seaman has been discussing some comments Aaron Ramsdale made about his World Cup chances.

The Arsenal goalkeeper was speaking to the Yours, Mine, Away! Podcast, and he stated that the tournament may be coming a bit too soon for him.

“I think the World Cup personally is six months too soon for me to really challenge,” Ramsdale said.

“And I’ve said this a few times, it’s not really for people to go: ‘oh no, you should be number one’. I’m being realistic, I’ve played three times for England with a World Cup coming in six weeks. I’m not really going to play.

“But that’s not me throwing the towel in. I’m fighting to be that starting goalkeeper. But if I’m not, I’ll support whoever is the best that I can.”

Ramsdale was very honest in his comments, but Seaman thinks that it was unnecessary for the Arsenal man to voice that opinion, stating that he’s giving Gareth Southgate an excuse not to pick him.

Seaman’s advice

Seaman spoke about Ramsdale’s comments.

“I saw Aaron playing against Leeds and he had a really good game, but what was weird is that I saw Aaron saying that the World Cup is coming six months too early for him, and I was like ‘you don’t need to say that, you don’t need to give anyone that excuse.’ If you’re 50/50 with someone and he’s said that in the press that might go against you. I might have a little bit of a word to advise him there to take it back because you never know,” Seaman said.

Not the best PR

Being an international footballer is mainly about your footballing ability, but you also have to manage your PR well.

If everyone thinks you should be England’s number one, there’s a chance Gareth Southgate will listen, but if you yourself are saying that you’re not ready, then what is the manager going to think?

Ramsdale is being realistic with these comments, but he’s not done himself any favours by voicing this point of view.

The Arsenal goalie may have put his foot in his mouth here and cost himself any chance of starting at the World Cup.
