Chris Sutton told BBC Radio Five Live Sport that Gareth Bale is at ‘fault’ for his slow start at Tottenham.

The former striker even suggested that Bale has ‘lost his hunger’, which annoyed host Mark Champan who responded by saying ‘you don’t know that’.

Bale netted a brace for Tottenham over the weekend when he helped his side secure a 4-0 win over Burnley.

Even though Bale was being praised for his recent performances, Sutton wasn’t having any of it and questioned why it has taken him so long to perform since his return to North London.

“It’s Gareth Bale’s fault,” said Sutton. The former striker is then asked by host Mark Champan ‘How do you know that?’

Sutton responded and stated: “Jose Mourinho’s comment tells us everything. When Gareth Bale is fit, he gets into any team in the world.

“Remember when Bale signed for Spurs and people were saying ‘Do Spurs have the best frontline now in the Premier League?’. Bale has taken too long to get himself into condition. And that’s a fact. There’s an argument that Bale has lost his hunger for the game.”

Host Champan then interrupted and said: “You don’t know that. We don’t know any of that, do we, Chris? We don’t know!”

Sutton responded: “We can only say on the back of what we have seen. We all know that Gareth Bale has been a world-class player. But Spurs haven’t got the best out of him. You cannot tell me a fit and flying Bale wouldn’t be a major asset for Jose Mourinho?

“How long does it take to get fit for heaven’s sake? It’s not been good enough. I don’t think we should get excited by a performance against West Ham and a performance against Burnley. And he scored (in the Europa League).”

It’s a lose-lose situation for Bale at Spurs because on one hand if he doesn’t perform then he’s past it or taking too long to deliver.

And then when he does perform, it’s against a team that’s seemingly deemed not good enough.

Bale didn’t join Tottenham to hit Kane or Heung-Min Son numbers, but to be efficient and produce at the vital moments, i.e. the up and coming League Cup final and during the knockout games of the Europa League.
