Alvaro Morata has reacted to Atletico Madrid’s decision to not extend Matt Doherty’s time at the club following his January arrival from Tottenham Hotspur.
The 31-year-old parted ways with Tottenham in the winter and became a free-agent, which led to La Liga giants, Atletico Madrid, adding him on board.
But Matt Doherty only played 16 minutes under Diego Simeone, with Alvaro Morata telling him in the comments section of his Instagram post: “My bro. You deserve all the best things, always. I will miss you.”
It wasn’t a surprise when Spurs allowed Doherty to leave during the middle of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.
But despite that, it wasn’t probably expected that he would have his contract ripped up rather than just sold on.
That’s the second time the north London club have done that, and with a right-back, after doing the same with Serge Aurier, who is now doing well at Nottingham Forest.

What next for Matt Doherty?
The Republic of Ireland international still has plenty of years left in the tank and these next six months wouldn’t have gone as planned.
Yes, he had the chance to play and train alongside some of the best in the game, but the end plan would have been to earn that long-term Atletico Madrid contract.
But that hasn’t happened and now it will be interesting to see if Doherty makes a return to the Premier League because he still has the quality to operate at a high level.
